Whether it is at a local pub or in a competitive tournament, billiards is one of the most popular game in the world. Millions of people each year take a stick and billiard balls, line them up on a table and have at it, until one of the players or teams sink the balls so that they win.
Billiards is often a game of strategy depending on the spin of the ball and the placement of the billiard balls around the table.
One of these games is called snooker. Snooker is a billiards game that originated with the British army while they were stationed in India. The officers added colored balls to the more traditional red and black pool balls that were used in pyramid pool, an already popular game. This game became popular because it required more thought in order to strategically defeat an opponent using different point values and planning which snooker balls to go after first. Snooker equipment features a lot of different equipment from other billiards games. Snooker equipment is a cue to hit the cue ball, a hook rest which can be placed around another ball in order to a hit a ball and a spider which can support the cue above the cue ball. However, the thing that separates snooker from other billiard games is uniqueness of the balls.
Snooker balls are much like pool balls in that they are round in shape, 2 1/16 inches in diameter, and come in many different colors. Just as in most billiards games, the main ball in snooker, or cue ball, is white and is used to hit the other snooker balls. However, unlike pool balls, snooker balls include different variations of billiards.
The red snooker balls are the most common on the table. If a player sinks one of the red snooker balls, they are awarded one point. There are 15 total red snooker balls on the table, so a potential total of 15 points is awarded by sinking them. The red snooker balls are placed in the middle of the table in the shape of a triangle. They are worth the least amount of points because they outnumber the other colors so greatly and the probability of sinking one of the red snooker balls is so great.
The other color snooker balls on the table are yellow, green, brown, blue, pink and black. The yellow snooker balls are placed on a white line at one end of the table along with the green and brown snooker balls. The black snooker ball is then placed behind the red snooker balls while the pink one is placed in front of them. The blue ball is placed directly in the center of the snooker table. These snooker balls all have different values. The snooker balls values start at two points with yellow and go up to seven points with black. The green one is worth three points, the brown is four points, blue being five points, and the pinks balls are worth six points. The placement of the snooker balls on the table and the different values of the balls makes it difficult for the players to decide which balls to go after and what way to shoot them.
Snooker can be looked at as one of the more strategic billiard games. The different values of the snooker balls and the way in which they are placed on the table sets it apart from any other game that involves billiard balls. Snooker is a challenging game compared to its counterparts; but once played, it could become addicting.
